WalMart - spreading like a virus
Things like this kinda shit me actually.

Look, I'm sure Walmart uses its buying power to do things that aren't nice indeed, I'm sure there are issues in various other parts of their organization etc.

BUT, this is capitalism. If you don't like them, don't shop in them. If they don't close down then it means that enough other people DO like them to continue using them.

If they start doing things that enough people don't like then some other store(s) can open to take that business, and then they can become super popular also.

You lot go ape over Walmart in the US as if it holds some all powerful hold over your lives... look into the Coles Group and Woolworth's holds in Australia... now THERE is a monopoly. (Sorry, I can't find the figures, they were in a show I was watching a few months back, but the percentage of retail sales controlled by these two groups in Australia is many times more than Walmart's in the US)

Zero Punctuation: Awards for 2008
Can I be the first to say how incredibly shit 'unskippable' looks? Can I? because really, someone with no real humour doing a voice over on bad cut scenes looks to be one perfect recipe for a really... really... bad use of your time.

Hamas firing mortars froma school (drone video)
Well, seeing as they are sending in tanks and troops anyway, couldn't they send troops in to these buildings to get those that are firing the mortars? They seem to 'know' where the attacks are coming from, so rather than just sending in missiles and accepting huge civilian casualites, wouldn't the 'right' thing to do be doing all you can to ONLY get the 'bad guys'?

Do note I say this with little to no understanding of how hard it would actually BE to get troops there, I'm just saying, why are bombs the only option?

And from my point of view, both sides are dead wrong on this... both sides who can't accept a peaceful outcome. Both sides who have decided it's their 'god given' right to inhabit a certain piece of soil.

Fuck religion, fuck people who take things as written in old books as inarguable proof and a just cause for them killing others.

Fuck them all for making the lives of all of those living on both sides of this that really just want peace, and don't really care for pissing matches over land

BART Police shooting in Oakland -- KTVU Report
>> ^joedirt:
This country is full of lazy assholes. The kind of people that allow planes to be hijacked. I don't care if they are cops, I mean they have to follow laws. I don't understand how people didn't make a scene after watching a murder.

Um, because you're talking about a bunch of armed cops. And you've just seen one unjustly shoot someone, so you aren't entirely sure of the mental state of them?

Really, what would have happened if there was some mass scene? Probably more killed. If you work on the idea that citizens should all be armed as well, then you would have just ended up with a lot more shot on both sides. If you work on the idea that citizens shouldn't be at a train station with guns then you have them not really wanting to do anything that may make the cops shoot more people.

Surely it's a lot more sensible to take your footage/eye witness of the incident and tell as many people as possible once you're out of danger?

Police shoot unarmed man, laying face down, in the back
It has to be a Taser mix up doesn't it? Surely? What could possibly be the rationale otherwise... other than perhaps him saying something that really riled up the cop and said cop has a serious issue with anger management.

If it were the Taser mixup, then surely that points to maybe that cops should have either/or, not both weapons. Too easy to make a mistake in the heat of conflict.

Having said said that...
a) He didn't even deserve a Taser... if you were to Taser someone in that situation you should be giving them every chance to stop before you fire... draw your Taser, warn them repeatedly...
b) I hate the way these news articles try to make the victim seem like a saint. I mean come on, in this situation you can't see ANYTHING that warrants being shot... but I love how they don't mention his record, or any of his prior charges. They just show pictures of him with his daughter and girlfriend.
c) The officer deserves to be locked up for a very, very long time.

Instruction Manual For Life
>> ^Winstonfield_Pennypacker:
No it doesn't. It never condemns them at all, what it condemns is his parent's closed mindedness.

A typical attempt to deflect responsibility. The fact remains that the video DOES strongly condemn all persons except the author himself as closed minded, intolerant, and jerks - and places the root responsibility on the 'manual' and everyone else's own ineptidute at reading it. That's a condemnation of the persons, no matter how much you may wish to pretend otherwise. Think about what you just said. "It doesn't condemn THEM... It condemns THIER closed mindedness"? Please illuminate how you can not condemn a person for THIER closed mindedness?

They never say anyone is foolish for believing what they do

In a word - baloney. It doesn't blatantly call them jerks, fools, and bastards - but the denotation is crystal clear. I reject the posit that a video in which people are protrayed so grotesquely negative and does nothing but cast them in a derogatory light can be interpreted as anything but calling them foolish in all but word.

Now... you have an issue with Atheists trying to stand up for SCIENCE...

I request that you cite where I did so. If you cannot then you are merely projecting your own bias onto me. I'll save you the time. There is no such quote. You cannot find it because I didn't say it. Take that hot air and blow up some other balloon with it.

*sigh*

The ONLY people that the video condemns are the parents and the two girls at the park. The parents NOT because of what they believe but because THEY punish and berate their child for thinking differently to them. The child reads the manual and discovers that his parents are following only portions of it, and that others are following portions of theirs. Therefore he decides that he will just follow his own way. He never condemns his parents for believing what they do, THEY condemn HIM for not just accepting what he's told.

Me saying you have an issue with Atheists standing up for science is based on the fact that 95% of 'atheist' videos are just that, standing up against religious people attacking science and trying to force creationism etc. onto the school system. So while you didn't say that you have an issue with Atheists standing up for science you apparently do because that's what the vast majority of said videos are.

This one is one of the few that is attacking the other problem with religious folk, that being their self righteousness and hatred of those who don't believe as they do.

NONE OF US CAN BE SURE AT ALL on questions of God etc. So to assume that you 'know' that you're right and others are wrong is SO... SO arrogant and vile. That's what this video is trying to get across (and you're missing entirely): As no-one can prove the existence or not, or form or not, or teachings or not of any one or more divine beings, then while you may have chosen to believe that things are way X, damn well let others chose to believe that things are way Y.

However, these beliefs in X or Y, and that A book or B book has the rules for life SHOULD NOT have a baring on how countries are run. Countries and laws and how we treat each other should be based on mutual respect, common understanding, caring for all and embracing differences. If religion could keep its hands off such things, then no-one would have an issue with it.

Instruction Manual For Life
>> ^Winstonfield_Pennypacker:

The vid claims to wonder, "why can't we all just celebrate the rich variety of shelves?" while at the same time it roundly condemns and lampoons his parents, his friends, and others for having chosen a particular set of shelves. It claims to want to celebrate diversity and freedom, while actively mocking others for having exercised it in ways the author personally did not agree with. It is hypocrisy most blatant, and utterly negates the supposed message the video is claiming to try and communicate.

No it doesn't. It never condemns them at all, what it condemns is his parent's closed mindedness. Their telling him to shut up when he tries to express his thoughts, their punishing him for thinking. THAT is what it is showing. IT NEVER condemns them for having their beliefs. It also IN NO WAY condemns Sanjeev. What it is showing there is how annoyed someone can be if you say to them 'Hey, what you believe is completely wrong', and to try to then force on said person that your beliefs are the only beliefs that are correct.

So you have come at this video with a preconceived notion of what it will be and then saw what you wanted to. You don't get it at all. They never say anyone is foolish for believing what they do, for their particular set of shelves, what they show is how harmful and closed minded it is to put down and discount someone purely based on their beliefs in some higher power.

Now... you have an issue with Atheists trying to stand up for SCIENCE... in almost every video you see you will see that what us Atheists are standing up for is Science. NOT whether you believe in something or not, but these people who choose to believe in the Bible, and then try to force what is written in there onto people who instead have actually learned how the world and the things in it work. DO NOT try to tell us that evolution is wrong, when it is obviously and demonstratively correct. DO NOT try to tell us that man and dinosaurs lived together and that the T-Rex lived on plants as THAT IS WRONG.

Debate all you like about things we do not know (the existence of a divine being), but do not try to use bullshit to pull the wool over people's eyes about scientific fact. THAT, and the condemning people for not believing in YOUR god is what gets Atheists going

The Atheist's Nightmare and the Christian's Horror Movie
The raw potato thing? Pretty false, the levels found in a raw potato as you would find from a shop are bugger all... the only time you really have to be careful of potatoes is when they're green... that's pretty much it.

Insane to eat onions when raw? Huh? Never had raw onion on a sandwich... just beautiful.

So overall, from the repeating of the whole darn argument that we've more than likely already seen or could look up ourselves, to the poor examples of food that are toxic or harmful. I can't give this an upvote at all, does the atheists no good at all.

Instruction Manual For Life
It really amazes me those who can actually take offense at this.

As long as there is a set of cupboards there for those of use who believe in no divine being, count me in for cupboard building.

As much as I think organized religion is a horrendous thing that brings nothing but harm to the world, I really do not care one jot what people chose to believe in. As long as their believes don't require or permit them to hurt others, then have at it.

This video says just let everyone be for god's sake. If someone believes that the canyons and rivers were created by a giant snake sliding around eons ago... go for it. It's only when it's forced on others, when the belief in something like that as being fact, with nothing to back it up is then pushed as needing to be taught in schools as fact. THAT is wrong. What should be taught in schools is what we have leaned by observation and experiment.

I WANT my kids to have religious education, but I want it to be a broad based, discussion style of learning where they find out about as many of the world's religions as possible, find out about where they come from, who practices them, what they believe. I want my kids to really know about religion because it is such a powerful force in the world. But I want them to know just how many ones there are and how, really, when it comes down to it, at the core, they really say the same thing, it's just people who have twisted the meanings into other, hateful things.

Religulous -- Full Movie
^ Exactly.

Some of the inserts were funny, othertimes they got in the way of a discussion I was enjoying (the 'maverick' from the Vatican)... but this movie is aimed fairly low because it runs with the pretty correct assumption that those who are atheists are, for the most part, of the more intelligent set, while the religious are the lower spectrum of education.

So aim low to try to get those who are religious to question, and if you miss those who already are not religious... what does it matter?
