I did post on your siftalk... but...:

I think I may have found what you're looking for... via 'thatguywiththeglasses.com' and then to spoony's website, I was watching some of his funny video game reviews, came across his review of The Thing... and I think it matches what you're asking for... http://www.spoonyexperiment.com/2007/02/25/the-thing-review/

Have I found it???

Do I get a prize?

you said that, not me.

In reply to this comment by spoco2:

The simple minded attitude that all these people's true natures are sex crazed, violent people who are just being held back by social norms is plain wrong.

1. your conclusion does not follow from your premise. you are putting forth the same argument as me, but you are drawing a conclusion that does not follow.

2. shooting guns in real life and playing a video game where you shot guns is as different as soccer and basketball. just because you like one, doesn't mean you have to like the other.

3. legal consequence, peer pressure, guilt, reputation, ego, etc. are all like duct tape over a singers mouth. it is only when the duct tape is removed that the sound of the singer is revealed.

you simply cannot "be yourself" when you are being restricted by such forces. anonymity is one way to free oneself of these forces and thus reveal oneself. the catch is that the only person who you revealed to is yourself...

you can date someone for a whole lifetime and never really know who they are. it is only in situations where all these forces are removed that you can really discover someone.

In reply to this comment by spoco2:
For some reason I managed to reply on my own profile!

Here it is:

I'm not saying online actions 'don't count', what I'm saying is that people don't always get that proper connect with the written word and a person like they do in reality. In reality they see the consequences of being bad to someone, or they know that doing so will make them feel bad. Online that might not occur to them as much.

People can and do act out things online that don't translate to reality. For instance, I hate guns... don't like them at all, they're stupidly dangerous and the number of accidental deaths of family members and friends by them every year makes me very sad. And yet I love FPS games. In the game I like to run around and shoot things, but I have no interest in real life of doing so.

Also, in an RPG or the like you may chose to be a real dickish character for fun, because it can be fun to be a dick when there are no consequences, and you're not really hurting anyone.

There are people who are complete dicks in games who don't see it as being dicks because it's all make believe and 'why should people get upset about their character being killed' etc.

This translates somewhat to online discussions too.

I'm not saying that someone who is a raving dickhead on Videosift is in 'reality' a really great, nice guy... generally the online self is fairly close to real life one in many ways. And in ways the online self acts out things that perhaps the real person is too timid too, but would love to, in real life. But it still doesn't make the anonymous person more REAL than the non anonymous one, just a different one.

what defines a person? their actions? do you think online actions "don't count"? how can your actions be "hyper actions"? how can real actions make you unreal?

being timid in real life and acting macho online doesn't make you macho, it makes you a "timid guy who is faking being macho". you said it yourself, now make the correct conclusion.

In reply to this comment by spoco2:
No, see I understood exactly where you were coming from with the comment, and to a certain degree it's true... but also not. People can become a hyper version of themselves and treat people like dickheads without consequence... and they don't feel bad all the time because it doesn't necessarily connect with them that the other lines of text come from a real person.

Also, a really timid person who wouldn't harm a flea in real life, may become someone with huge macho tendancies online. Doesn't mean that they really are macho deep down, they're just acting out something that is NOT actually part of them, but they wish was.

It can make for an Unreal version of themselves rather than a real one...

those who think anonymity changes who they are don't know themselves. using anonymity as an "excuse" for your actions is simply a way to feel better about being a douchebag online.

being anonymous frees you from social or legal consequences, which is an environment where peoples true character shines through. this is why an individual might not commit murder, but an individual in a lynch mob will. they were always a murderer, but it took an environment free of consequence (and full of anonymity) to reveal it.

In reply to this comment by spoco2:
Indeed, as MINK says, anonymity doesn't really reveal who you are... Who ARE you anyway? Are you the person who people know in 'real life', are you the one who is known by your work/classmates, or the one known by your family? Or the one know only to your lover?

The difference with what I say online in places like this is that I will say things about my life I wouldn't necessarily say to all people I interact with in public as it'd be a little bit too much info... but online you can do so as it doesn't affect idle chit chat and personal meetings.

Having said that, online I'm not anonymous at all, in that I use the same handle EVERYWHERE... the spoco2 you'll find pretty much dang near anywhere online will be me. Plus I have posted to files hosted on my own server, which without much snooping around will show more about me... So I try not to be a prick from that point of view as I know that it's a known name. Also, there are people in real life who always call me Spoco, so they'd probably be able to read an awful lot of ramblings by me based on that too.

So, in the world of anonymity I don't go for full, and so I guess that might influence what I say?

I think the main thing with the anonymity really works the other way for me. I can give some fairly terse responses to comments on the sift because ALL I know about most people are their comments, so you have this narrow view of someone and don't know all that other information that helps shape the place they make their comments from. As such you attack the comments more directly I think, and with less regard to perhaps offending some other thing about the person who said them, because you don't know anything else.

If that makes sense?

She's cute, pretty hands/fingers ... but yeah, I can't explain the fetish either. It sort of borders on pedophilia in some ways. I just know it exists. Especially in Japan, where women are getting eye surgery, contacts, there are child like anime sex dolls for sale .. etc. Sad but true.

In reply to this comment by spoco2:
Yeah, I do get the attraction of eyes like that I guess, but she doesn't DO anything... and there's just so many videos of her not doing anything... it's odd. I can see how you could look at her once and go 'oh, yeah, cute', but for her to become SUCH a huge phenomenon is beyond me.

In reply to this comment by burdturgler:
It's the large anime like eyes. Apparently a lot of men in Japan (I'm sure elsewhere also) have a fetish for it.

In reply to this comment by spoco2:
And it's not like the Wikipedia page on her explains anything more... it makes you even more confused because of just HOW popular she is.

I DON'T GET IT!!!

Actually, the one I posted really is my favorite part, but you're right, there are a few more clips that definitely deserve to be sifted!

In reply to this comment by spoco2:
Are you sure you have the right clip here? Based on your tags I assume you meant it to be http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=lfwycQ5e1iY one?

Your comment just made my year! holy shit that's funny.

In reply to this comment by spoco2:
And ensure you have a klaxon constantly wailing from somewhere in your clothes
And have a blinding revolving light strapped to your head
And be armed with a semi-automatic handgun in case you are set upon by banshees or werewolves.
And perhaps don't go out at all but just yell 'trick or treat' from your doorstep.
Actually that might carry the risk of being shot from afar, so do it from inside... via a megaphone
And then if you do get any candy, well, don't eat that it might be poisoned.
In fact what the hell are you doing up so late anyway, get back to bed.
